An end to passwords in sight?

Passwords are driving me nuts. Let’s see how many I’ve got – all with different passwords:

  1. Intranet at work
  2. Email × 5 accounts
  3. Student system × 2
  4. Forums × 4
  5. Servers × 5
  6. Banks × 4
  7. Other financial institutions × 3
  8. Google accounts × 3
  9. Yahoo account
  10. Airlines × 3 (frequent flyer, etc)
  11. Plagiarism company × 2

So it’s more than 35 accounts. Crazy.

There needs to be one centralised security system that allows the user to identify themselves once, and have access to everything from there. It may need to involve an iris scan, or fingerprint, or smart card or even embedded RFID chip, whatever.

Bill (Gates) is talking about it: Windows Vista & passwords

Dick Hardt of Sxip Identity also has a possible password solution [Sorry, link no longer available] (This presentation is a brilliant use of Powerpoint).

There is some interesting mathematics involved in password encryption. It is one of the many “real-life” uses of mathematics today.
