Friday Math Movie – Sexy maths

There has been an up-tick in the search volume for “mathematics” (and the associated British English abbreviation “maths”) in the UK.

Current.com presents the following short gem, Sexy maths which talks about the poor level of maths in the UK and how searchers on Google have responded.

Watch for the bit where he says…

There is a limit to how sexy we can make quadratic equations.

… and observe what is on the screen at that time – definitely not a quadratic equation!

Update: Unfortunately, the movie is no longer available. Booo. Sorry about that. Why, current.com??

I found the movie via Google Zeitgeist, which gives readers an insight into what people are searching for on Google. Zeitgeist had a link to this week’s math movie on Current.com (Al Gore’s media company).

Certainly sudoku is appealing but frankly it does not actually teach math – it is simply forbidding repetition of 1′s, 2′s, 3′s up to 9′s in a row, column or 3 x 3 square.
These days I have been visiting J?ss Sticks and in some posts Miss Loi refers to herself as a sexy math tutor. When I glimpsed at this blog’s title I thought that it might discuss something like this but it doesn’t matter.
In fact plus.maths.org also contains a bit of reporting on the declining math standard.
Maybe the students should wear funny glasses that twist math into sexy figures. (Just a silly thought.)

Hi again Carlton. I already had an update stating the movie had disappeared.

I’ve removed the movie code altogether.
