I recently spent an enjoyable afternoon at the Buddhist Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery. It was built in the early 1900s but was in a bad state of disrepair until restoration work in the late 1990s.

The monastery is right next to the busy PIE (Pan-Island Expressway), but you can still find quiet and restful nooks and crannies.

HDB flats surround the monastery on three sides.

Brand new roofing on an old temple. You expect it to be old and a bit more decrepit.

The gardens are a delight:

It is one of the largest monasteries in South East Asia and it was modeled after the Xi Chan Si in Fuzhou, China. It is still operating as a monastery.
