MIT’s One Laptop Per Child - the XO
This is a great concept - the US$100 laptop designed for kids in Third World countries.
It does not rely on the Internet for connectivity. Rather, it can detect other nearby laptops and students can communicate with them using WiFi.
There are several clever built-in learning applications (like a measuring application and various creativity apps including collaborative art and music activities). They can even do video-conferencing. It is all open source, hence the low cost.
