Pi Day: March 14th

Tomorrow is Pi Day, celebrated because π is approximately 3.14.

Remembering the Digits of Pi

For a party trick (or if you have no life), try learning the digits of pi.

Here is George Polya’s mnemonic for the first fifteen digits of π :

How I need a drink, alcoholic of course, after the heavy chapters involving quantum mechanics

[The lengths of the words are the digits. George Polya was very influential in mathematics education, especially in problem solving.]

From the BBC:

In September 2002, Pi was computed to 1,240,000,000,000 decimal places by Professor Yasumasa Kanada at the University of Tokyo. It took over 400 hours on a Hitachi Supercomputer.

New Pi Page

Getting into the spirit of the day, I added a new page to the Interactive Mathematics site today: Pi.
