SPCA – Some hope?

Singapore’s SPCA received around 10,500 unwanted animals in the 12 months to Jun 2005. This is about 10% less than the year before, and this could be the start of an encouraging trend.

About 1000 are adopted, 700 are claimed and the remaining 8,700 are “humanely destroyed”. The government-run AVA (Animal and Veterinary Authority) deal with around twice these numbers. This is crazy – pets should not be like all the other trivia that people buy and then get sick of a few weeks later.

The SPCA suggests microchipping and sterilisation to reduce the problem. But surely stricter limits on the breeding and sale of pets would be more effective?
