REAL-LIFE MATH EXAMPLE – Probability and Gambling

One of the more popular pages in Interactive Mathematics is “Toto Example”, which explains the probability of winning a lottery game where you pick 6 numbers from 45 numbers.

Check it out at Singapore Toto.

THIS MONTH’S MATH TIP

When studying for a mathematics test, try the following:

a) FIND OUT how the topic fits with other topics (there should be a document telling you the learning outcomes for the course, as well as each topic). If you do this, you are not learning in a vacuum.

b) LEARN KEY FORMULAS, even if the formulas are provided for you in the test. By learning them, you will recognise them more easily as you are learning other stuff AND you will remember to use it in the test.

c) BE ACTIVE. Rather than just reading through example questions, try to SOLVE them. Also, write out the formulas to help you learn them. Mathematics is not a spectator sport!
